Who are you going to call?

MyLibrary essentially consists of four parts: 1) librarians, 2) information resources, 3) users, and 4) a controlled vocabulary. This posting elaborates on the first part — the librarians.

Libraries do not exist without librarians. Somebody has to build these things. The case is no different in MyLibrary. Librarians do many tasks. They collect. They organize. The preserve. They interface with the object of library collections and services — users.

When creating a MyLibrary instance, give thought to who is going to do the work. What are their names? What is their contact information? What are their roles?

Through the use of the MyLibrary::Librarian module, MyLibrary includes a number of methods for recording the answers to the questions above. Once recorded the MyLibrary::Librarian module enables a library to report on things such as:

  • “The librarian for history is…”
  • “The name of your librarian is…”
  • “For more information call…”

Increasingly people do not visit libraries to ask questions. Instead they expect to get the answers to their questions through a computer via the Internet. By adding librarians to your implementation you can help meet users’ expectations to a greater degree.
